Foothills Park & Recreation District in conjunction with
Sports Made Possible has
built a 100% handicap accessible baseball field, the first of its kind in the State of Colorado.
|
|
The Jason Jennings Mile High Adaptive Field has a cushioned synthetic turf to help
prevent injuries, provide access to wheelchair bound or visually impaired
athletes. This field has been created because everyone deserves the chance
to play baseball as a team member in an organized sport. The philosophy of
the league is everyone bats, everyone scores and everyone wins in a non-competitive atmosphere.
Buddies, coaches and team parents assist most Foothills adaptive baseball
players. These individuals are children/adults who may or may not play baseball,
but who have an interest in helping others with special needs realize their
dreams. As a result the parents, children and volunteers are all brought
together in a program that serves them all through services with to those with special needs.
|
The field is built in an existing sports complex, Schaefer Athletic
Complex so these children can play next to their able body peers. Other
leagues charge a fee to play and we too want these children to have ownership
of their league. The charge is $45/ per player/ season. There is financial
aid to those who cannot afford the full or any part of the fee.
NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY…every child deserves a chance to play baseball.
Children participating in the adaptive leagues will have the opportunity to
learn sportsmanship and teamwork, both of which are part of the rules of the game:
- Every player bats once each inning
-All base runners are safe
-Every player scores a run before the inning is over
-Community children and volunteers serve as “buddies” to assist the players
-Each team and each player wins every game.
