Active Adults Find Community at Foothills
As we age, finding ways to stay active, both mentally and physically are so important. From events and excursions to health talks, fitness classes and clubs, our Active Adult program offers something for everyone.
Take Wanda Carlile for example. Wanda and her husband Bob began taking fitness classes through Foothills in the 1980s while their kids played sports with the District. In the 1990s they started working with a personal trainer, Michelle Baum, who still works for Foothills to this day. They also met Terri Gillan, a fitness instructor who now runs the Active Adult program.
Now retired, they’ve enjoyed many Active Adult excursions and events. “We enjoyed being chauffeured to the Newman Center to see Irish music and step dancers. The Denver Mob Tour, with stories of the Smaldone brothers and lunch at Gaetano’s is a favorite memory,” Wanda said.
They never miss the big social events either. This fall, Casino Royale comes to Foothills, with casino games, James Bond trivia and a catered dinner.
But the biggest event of the year is Active Adult Open House. “There are tables and tables of sponsors offering everything from virtual reality to a tech tutor. If you register, lunch is provided,” Wanda said. “I like to volunteer at the registration table, and welcome old friends and those new to Foothills.” The event is free to all who attend.
Through friendships they’ve made with long-term employees and the sense of family they’ve built with other Active Adult patrons, Wanda and Bob have built a strong community at Foothills.
Another long-time employee who helps create a sense of community is excursion leader Erik Kerzee. “I always introduce myself and try to be friendly. And, our patrons naturally make connections with each other. It is neat to see someone on his or her first excursion, when they show up, not knowing anyone, and at the end knowing almost everyone in the van.”
