Historically low snowpack has led Denver Water and others to declare a Stage 1 drought and impose restrictions on their customers. Foothills Park & Recreation District was notified by Denver Water to reduce 2026 water consumption by 20% for any irrigated properties that are provided potable water from Denver Water.
Foothills has been asked to manage overall use throughout all properties as opposed to specific days of watering. We are taking the following steps and actions for water conservation and protection:
- Irrigate certain areas multiple days per week, even though residential properties are limited to 2 days a week. Rest assured that Foothills is still working within the goal to reduce total water usage by 20%.
- Scale back irrigation in low traffic, non recreational spaces so we can focus water use on the places you depend on most, such as sports fields and active use areas.
- Safeguard our tree canopy by strategically watering to ensure trees remain healthy.
- As conditions change, some landscapes may appear less green than usual.
- Easton Regional Park, Schaeffer Athletic Complex, Foothills Golf Couse, Meadows Golf Club and Clement Park are all irrigated with non-potable water sources (ditch and reservoir water) and are not subject to the same watering restrictions imposed by Denver Water. However, in an effort to conserve stored and reduced resources, the District will reduce water consumption at these sites as well.
- Golf courses may have naturally greener and better-looking grass than residential lawns. This is in part to specialized turf management practices, which have been in place for years, such as aerating, soil treatments, etc. Additional changes to the look and playability of our courses may change as the summer season goes on, depending on changing drought conditions.
- Indoor facilities, swimming pools and splash pads are exempt from the water restrictions.
Please help us in our conservation efforts. If you notice a broken/leaky sprinkler head or sprinklers that appear to be running nonstop, please report it using our Sprinkler and Irrigation Issues Form.
Foothills Park & Recreation District’s water supply is not limited to one provider, instead it is serviced by several different sources, including some areas with water rights. Because we access water from many different sources throughout the District, some areas may look different than others. If you have questions about water use in a specific location, please let us know.
Drought affects our entire community and meaningful water conservation requires everyone’s participation.
